YOUTH CAMP CURRICULUM


Flagler County Art League

Youth Summer Camps 2010

The Art League summer camps will be held in three one- week sessions, and are
intended for children 6 years old and up.  The sessions are as follows:

June 21 – 25:  Ages 6 – 11

July 26 – 30: Ages 12 and up

August 2 – 6:  Ages 6 – 11 (Repeat first session)

LOCATION : The Art League at  33  Old Kings Road North, Suite 1  Palm Coast, FL

TIME:  All sessions will be from 9:00am – 12:00pm

ALL SESSIONS:      Wear your art!  (Paint T shirts or
handkerchiefs)                               

Art! Camera!  Action! (Learn to take good photographs)                              

Clay Motions (Make 3D art with clay)                              

Draw, Partner!  (Learn basic drawing techniques)                   

        Going to Collage…  (Make a mixed-media collage)                               

Paint your world!  (Basic landscape painting)                              

Line Designs (Make artwork using lines, angles and colors)                           

It’s a Complement (Make art project using complementary colors)  

6 – 10 years old:   Paint Your Veggies!  (Make artwork using vegetable
stamps)                                

Scribble Me This:  (Free form artwork)                               

String Art (Creative artwork using string)  

Tweens/Teens:  Scratch Art (Wax resist art designs)                              

Folded Art (Make a project using paper folding)                             

Imaginarium:  Create an aquarium of imaginary creatures                   



ALL CAMPERS MUST BRING A PLAIN WHITE TEE SHIRT - NO LOGOS OR
DESIGNS - AND A DISPOSABLE CAMERA.

MONDAY:  

1.   Design your name.  Campers will create a nameplate to use for the week.
           Supplies:  folded paper or poster board and crayons or markers

2.   Emphasis lesson:  Teach the principle of emphasis or focus and have students
create examples.  Emphasis may be created with size, space, color, shape or position
among other things.  Lesson plan provided.
          Supplies:  drawing paper and crayons or markers.

3.   Balance lesson:  Teach the principle of visual balance, (horizontal, vertical,
diagonal and radial), and have students create artwork using this principle.  Lesson
plan will be provided.
          Supplies:  white paper, colored paper scraps, scissors and glue

4.  Photography:  How to compose a good photograph.  Instructor will build upon the
ideas of emphasis and balance to teach campers how to compose a good picture,
using those principles, lighting, subject matter and whatever else instructor feels is
necessary for a basic photography lesson.
         Supplies:  Precut squares, one digital camera and a disposable camera for
each student

5.  Catch game:  Using emphasis and balance, decorate two connected paper plates
to create game.
         Supplies:  Pre-made games (left over from Kids Zone), crayons, scissors, and
glue paper scraps.

Free drawing if needed to complete session time.

Wednesday:

1.  Clay Motions  Make 3D art using clay (Need instructor and supplies)
      Youths:  Self-drying clay
      Tween/teens:  polymer clay  (Maybe beads?)

2.  Draw, Partner (Instructor would be nice)
      Basic drawing techniques geared to the camper's ability levels
      Supplies:  paper and pencils, cut out squares from photography session, object
or still life to draw

3.   Youths:  Scribble me this - Free form drawing using crayons on paper
  Tweens/teens:  Prepare paper for scratch art
      Supplies:  crayons and paper
      (Instructor will need black tempera paint and a little liquid dish soap)

Thursday:

1. Paint your world:  Campers will learn basic landscape painting techniques and do a
guided painting with instructor
     Supplies:  paper or canvases, paints, brushes, water, (maybe easels?), plates for
palettes

2. It's a complement:  Teach complementary colors and have campers paint a small
project using only 2 complementary colors.
     Supplies:  Paper or tagboard, brushes, water and paint trays

3.  Youths:  Vegetable printing; Campers use cut vegetables as "stamps" to create an
art work using paint on paper.  Principles of emphasis, balance color and line should
apply.
     Supplies:  Cut broccoli, carrots, zucchini and potatoes, paper trays and paint.
   
 Tweens/Teens:  May do vegetable printing as well.  Also do scratch off art.
     Supplies:  Wooden skewers and toothpicks, prepared scratch off sheets

Friday:

1. Going to Collage:  Campers create an artwork using cut and shredded paper
and/or fabrics.
     Supplies:  Paper samples, fabric samples, newspapers, catalogues, giftwrap,
scissors, glue, paper or poster board

2.  Tween/teens:  Folded art (Need instructor) Make folded paper artwork
    Supplies:  Paper, scissors

3:  Youths:  String art:  Use string/yarn and crayons to create artwork on paper
    Supplies:  Paper, scissors, glue, yarn, crayons

4:  Imaginarium:  Use any leftover paper and supplies to create imaginary creatures in
an aquarium.
     Supplies:  paper, scissors, crayons, glue, wax paper, iron.

FINISH ANY PROJECTS ALREADY UNDERWAY.  FREE DRAWING, IF NEEDED
